INTRODUCTION

Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) is the largest academic department in Politeknik Sultan Mizan Zainal Abdin (PSMZA), Dungun Terengganu. Since the opening operation in year 2001, the Head of Department is Tn. Hj. Abdul Karim bin Awang Kechik. Until January 2008 session, this department consists of 93 lecturers. There are two technicians in charge of managing and maintaining the workshop/lab equipment and an administrative assistant is responsible to handle problems in the office. The number of students until June 2000 session is 2246.

Mechanical Engineering Department offers five engineering programs which are Mechanical, Mechatronic, Manufacturing, Automotive and Plastic Technology. The main purpose of Mechanical Engineering Department is to produce semi professional workforce in Mechanical Engineering field in order to fulfill the national workforce in private and government sector. Six workshops and eleven labs complete with latest and sophisticated equipment are provided to students for their practical training in order to enhance their outstanding to give deeper understanding for the students in their own field of study.

In the early stage of the operation, all the courses in this department are using the same curriculum used in all polytechnics of Ministry of Higher Education. In May 2002, this department implemented new curriculum together with other polytechnics for new intake. JKM is always concern on the academic excellence and personality of the students. There are 215 students who receive the Head of Department’s Award during the Excellence Award Night in July 2007 session.

Keen to produce excellent student who is balance in intellectual, spiritual, physical, emotion and social according to the vision made by polytechnics of Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia.

Student will become semi professional workforce with good quality in Mechanical Engineering field in order to fulfill the national workforce.
